The Medicine Body

I have been on my path, that is, consciously aware that there existed a spiritual path for me, since 1985. My choice as a healer has been around for a while but to follow the traditions of the medicine people of the Andes is recent. I had been training under my current teacher for over a year and had come to expect the unexpected as part of the normality of life.

I had the opportunity to work with and observe my teacher during ceremony on behalf of a client. This client presented for some follow-up, having had an “extraction” (removal of an energy intrusion) ceremony performed 2 weeks prior. After completing an interview, my teacher determined that the client would benefit from an “imprint removal” (cleansing the energy body of an undesirable energy pattern) and the ceremony was explained to the client. We called the spirits of the four directions, earth and sky to create sacred space and the client was made comfortable on the medicine blanket on the floor.

As the apprentice, it was my place to “hold space” and to observe. As such, I placed myself at the feet of the client with my Mesa (medicine bundle) in my lap as we began the ceremony. As the first step in this ceremony, my teacher extended his luminous or medicine body over the client. I began to focus on my breathing and the energies of both teacher and client as they flowed and interacted.

At some point early in the ceremony, the room began to liquefy. This is the only way I have found to describe my observation. All of the lines and objects outside the area covered by my teachers luminous body still had definition and color but had no form. They just appeared to flow around the area covered by the luminous body. I knew I was in “Sacred Space” and observing “Shamanic Time”.

My teachers body began to take on an irregular shape and a glow began to break through at various places on his face. While I could not “label” the shapes or forms at the time, through journey and meditation I have identified them as the body of a Jaguar and the head and shoulders of an Owl. The Jaguar was seated at the client’s head where my teacher had been, and his head had become the shoulders and head of the Owl perched on top of the Jaguar’s shoulders.

After the ceremony, and in a later discussion with my teacher, I related what I had seen. He confirmed to me that the “Power Animals” and “Medicine Spirits” that had come to the healing circle that night were in fact the Owl and Jaguar. That I was able to see and experience my teacher “Shape shift” was without a doubt a gift of the East. I am grateful to these spirits of the east, the Eagle and the Condor for showing me these new possibilities.

Expecting the unexpected, and in fact having no expectations at all, accepting all things as possible, is proving to be my strongest ally and greatest teacher on the journey along my path. It also stimulates the question, “What will you accept as possible on your journey?”
